2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable, one of the world’s most famous painters, born in East Bergholt. Constable grew up surrounded by the fields, rivers and mills of the Stour Valley, which inspired many of his most loved paintings. He remained deeply attached to East Bergholt and Dedham Vale all his life, calling it “the care of my heart.” Today he is celebrated as one of England’s greatest landscape artists, best known for masterpieces such as The Hay Wain and Dedham Vale.
The village of East Bergholt will host events throughout 2026 to mark the 250th anniversary, alongside the Constable 250 celebrations, featuring three landmark exhibitions.

Constable Painting Workshop
The Red Lion, East Bergholt
Saturday 13th June | 2pm until 6pm
£55 for the workshop. tea & coffee included
Join local artist Ginny Carter for a fun, relaxed workshop where you’ll create your own painting of "Cottage in a Cornfield". This workshop celebrates Constable 250, in the same village where John Constable painted the original cottage.
During this 4 hour workshop you will be guided to paint your
own 9x7cm masterpiece using acrylic paints. No artistic skills
are needed as your pre-drawn canvas will be ready for you to
paint. all materials and tuition are included.
Places are limited so each painter can receive plenty of support. You’ll be assured a warm welcome, plenty of encouragement, and tea & coffee.
