Valentine’s Challenge

Saturday 14th February

This six-hour endurance running event is designed for those looking to push themselves a little harder. Participants can run solo or part of a team, making it as social as it is challenging. It's a unique way to mark Valentine’s - or you might rather opt for dinner at the pub!

Guided safaris offer the chance to explore one of Suffolk’s most famous nature reserves with expert knowledge. Winter is an excellent time to spot migratory birds and dramatic landscapes. These walks are relaxed, informative and suitable for families with older children.


Lavenham 10k

Sunday 1st February

A popular mixed-terrain run set in the Suffolk countryside, starting and finishing in historic Lavenham. The route takes in quiet lanes and village scenery along the old railway line. Ideal for runners looking for an early-season challenge.

Lackford Lakes Winter Events

Dates vary

A programme of seasonal events including lino printing and clay workshops. These experiences encourage a connection with nature, and are open to adults and children. Why not warm up with lunch at The Weeping Willow afterwards?


Wild Wire Workshop at Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve

11th January from 10am until 4pm

Create a wire bird sculpture with local artist and wildlife enthusiast, Paul Green. Not only will you learn how to work with 3D materials, you'll find out more about the artist featured on Channel 4's Grayson Art Club.


Sip & Paint Night at The Anchor

13th January

Treat yourself - and friends - to an evening of creativity at The Anchor, Nayland.

Constable: A Cast of Characters

28th March - 14th June

Christchurch Mansion will be hosting a number of exhibitions in celebration of artist, John Constable's, 250th anniversary. Included is Constable: A Cast of Characters, exploring the people who inspired or sat for Constable’s paintings.


Pride and Prejudice inspired Murder Mystery

Thursday 5th February

After another brilliant Murder Mystery night with The Pantaloons in autumn, we're thrilled that they will be returning to The Black Lion, Long Melford, for a Regency Mystery Supper - otherwise known as Mr Darcy's birthday celebration.

Reopening in March

This reconstructed Norman castle complete with museum displays and animals offers a mix of history and hands-on exploration. It's especially great for young families, and be sure not to miss the largest toy collection in the world in The House on The Hill Museum.


Saffron Walden Common and Turf Maze

Open year-round

Explore wide open green space and challenge yourself to solve the historic turf maze. A simple but enjoyable winter walk just off the bustling Saffron Walden high-street and not far from The Eight Bells.


Colchester Castle & Riverside Detective Trail

Embark on a self-guided Detective Mystery Trail through Colchester. Follow in the steps of archeologists as you uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of Chariot Land.


Danbury Country Park: Family Forest School

7th February and 7th March

Create memories around the campfire, swing in hammocks and challenge yourself to the rope ladder.

Family Forest School engourages toddlers through to grandparents to join once a month for an array of outdoor activities.

Flatford Mill and RSPB Flatford

Open year-round

Winter brings brilliant birdlife and quieter paths, so wander around Constable Country to embrace a colder morning. It's an atmospheric landscape just a short distance away from The Red Lion, East Bergholt.


The Big Winter River Clean

7th February, 9.30am - 12.30pm

Join the Big Winter River Clean team for a paddle on the River Stort as they collect litter and clean the waterways. "Canoes, paddles and buoyancy aids will be provided as well as litter pickers, gloves and bin bags." Not only will you be helping with a good deed, warm up afterwards with complimentary tea and coffee.


Northey Island

Opening end of March

A peaceful retreat on the Blackwater Estuary, just outside Maldon, this saltmarsh is the closest you'll get to the wild in Essex and is a habitat for many species of plants and wildlife.

Thaxted Guildhall

Opening in Easter

Although you can not explore inside the guildhall until April, its architecture alone makes it worth a visit. Not far from The Cricketers, Clavering, it's perfect to combine with a village stroll, and be sure to take in their picturesque church on your travels too.


Essex Record Office: The Loss of The London

31st March

'The London Shipwreck: Her Final Voyage' is a new exhibition at Southend Central Museum. Presenting newly released finds from the wreck of the London, a warship that sank off the coast in 1665, this exhibition is great for budding historians.


London Philharmonic Orchestra at Saffron Hall

Sunday 15th February, 3.30pm

Danielle de Niese and the London Philharmonic Orchestra will take you to Broadway with a night of well-known songs from the stage, including hits from West Side Story, Kiss Me Kate and South Pacific.


The Big Bus Tour

14th March

Join the BBC Essex broadcasters, Steve Scruton and Ian Wyatt, for a guided trip on Layer Marney Tower’s historic London Routemaster bus. You'll be guided through Essex landscapes, including Abberton Reservoir, Mersea Island, and Tiptree. Top off the tour with a visit to Layer Marney's Long Gallery for afternoon tea.

Seal Pups at Horsey or Blakeney Point

Usually November - February

Winter is seal pup season along the North Norfolk coast, and it’s one of the region’s most unforgettable experiences. Boardwalks and viewing areas allow visitors to watch the pups from a respectful distance.

Be sure to wrap up warm and enjoy just a hop, skip and jump from The White Horse, Blakeney.

Free Family Fun Days at Cley Marshes

These free sessions offer nature-based activities designed to engage children with the outdoors. Families can enjoy trails, crafts and wildlife discovery led by the team at Cley Marshes Education Centre. A relaxed and welcoming introduction to nature reserves!


Felbrigg Hall National Trust Estate

Open daily 

Borrow a Tracker Pack and set off on a 2.6 mile circular walk around the church and ice house to explore Felbrigg's impressive parkland. The pack contains binoculars and animal track sheets to make an engaging walk for all.

Experience Anglesey Abbey gardens in their winter glory with sensory walks, winter planting and snowdrop displays. Start your day with a visit to The Carpenters Arms for brunch before peaceful exploration in this quieter season.


Wandlebury: Meet the Cows

16th February, 10.30am - 12pm

This gentle walk introduces visitors to the Wandlebury Belted Galloway cattle that help manage the park. Learn about conservation grazing while enjoying views across the Gog Magog Hills and maybe visit the farmshop on your way home!


Snowdrops at Peckover

Enjoy sweeping displays of snowdrops, winter aconites and early blossoms. It's a lovely reason to get outdoors as the garden is filled with scent and colour, despite spring still being a little while away.

A city-wide celebration of creativity featuring exhibitions, workshops and public events. Venues across Cambridge take part, offering something for all interests and is a highlight of the winter calendar.


Chamber Music Concert

26th February

An evening of creative performances by newcomers, Aaron Azunda Akugbo and Ryan Corbett, at Kettle's Yard. This night of music is for those seeking something a little different, the gallery is transformed into a music venue for one night only.


What I (Don’t) Know About Autism

29th March, 7.30pm

A powerful and thought-provoking play inspired by real-life stories. An important and engaging night at the The Arts Theatre, Cambridge; the production challenges assumptions while celebrating neurodivergent creativity and strengths.

Airframes After Hours Photography Evening

Clay for a Day
